The movie goes back and forth between him and shots of the ocean, showing that he may be lost and unsure of what’s going on in his life. The way Oliver looks out his window, it seems as if he’s lost and trying to observe the world. Previous to this, the credits roll into nature scenes of water that looks cold, due to the dim lighting and time of day (dawn). His bedroom is dark, and he’s sitting by his window at what might be around the time of dawn, in deep contemplation. The misc-en-scene is shown right away in the first scene while Oliver is narrating. The fast cuts are infrequent though, keeping the majority of the shots slow, giving off a level, calm feeling to the rest. The jolts can feel sometimes chaotic, as if he feels anxious about the situation at hand. These portray his thought process and his confusion to the world. Then there will be shots that are quick jolts that are close ups of faces or objects shown from the perspective of Oliver. The camera has a lot of slow pans, creating a sense of no urgency and lethargy. This plays a role in the sleepy cinematic atmosphere. The music is all songs sang by Alex Turner, the lead singer of the band Arctic Monkeys, who has a similar sound to the band, The Smiths, in his voice. Instead, he should be cozy and comfortable inside. This gives the sensation that it’s too early to be awake and thinking like Oliver is. The nature shots have a sleepy feeling to them because they’re captured with little to no sunlight. The world is so unknown and odd to him, showing that it’s still dim and there’s more for him to learn before it can light up. ![]() The design of the movie follows the feelings in which Oliver goes through. The first scene of Oliver sitting in class the teacher is explaining self-discovery and asking the question, “Who am I?” foreshadowing a theme.Īs the film begins, Oliver is shown to be very important as the back of his head is in the center of the frame, surrounded by nothing but beautiful nature. Especially for college students, feelings of love come and go, as well as finding your self worth, while dealing with separation or hardships with family. All these discoveries are closely tied to culture today, because these emotions are apart of going through life. Through events in the movie, Oliver learns about the feelings that contribute to alterations in love, the depression tied to family matters, and how to deal with what seems to be such a weird unknown world.
